Sundargarh: In another self-immolation case in Odisha on Sunday, a Plus II girl student attempted suicide by setting herself on fire in Sundargarh district.
According to sources, the incident took place in the hostel of Government Women’s College at Sundargarh in the afternoon. While most of the boarders had gone out due to the holiday, the Plus II student went inside a bathroom of the hostel and set fire to herself.
As the fire engulfed her dress and started spreading on her body, the young student cried for help. On hearing her cries, some boarders and hostel staff broke open the door of the bathroom and doused the fire on the student.
They rushed her in an ambulance to the district headquarters hospital. As her condition started deteriorating, she was shifted to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla.
The sources said entire torso of the girl from waist to neck has been burnt in the self-immolation attempt. But the cause of the immolation has not been known, they added.
The superintendent of the hostel, Smitarani Patel, admitted that the incident took place but did not reveal the details.
In another incident, a woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in Simulia of Balasore district.
