Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) as part of a major push to expand modern public transport infrastructure in the region.

The launch event took place at Shatabdi Nagar in Meerut. Modi, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other officials, took a ride on the train from Shatabdi Nagar to Meerut South, reported India Today.

Namo Bharat RRTS: The fully completed 82-kilometre Delhi–Meerut corridor — India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System — has now been opened end-to-end, promising faster intercity travel in the National Capital Region.

Meerut Metro: The new metro service in the city covers key urban areas and operates on the same infrastructure as the RRTS between Meerut South and Modipuram, marking a first-of-its-kind integrated model.

Officials say both services are designed to be fast, modern and efficient, with the Metro set to become one of India’s fastest metro systems.

Reduced travel times: The Namo Bharat RRTS dramatically cuts commute times between Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut compared with road travel.

The Namo Bharat RRTS corridors, built for high speeds, aim to connect satellite cities with the national capital more efficiently than traditional rail or road options.
