Bhubaneswar: Barpali railway station in Odisha’s Baragada district has been revamped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, emerging as a contemporary, passenger-friendly facility that beautifully integrates modern amenities with the region’s rich cultural identity.
The station was redeveloped at a cost of approximately ₹22 crore as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to transform railway stations into world-class, inclusive, and future-ready transport hubs. The upgrade is expected to improve passenger convenience, boost regional connectivity, and drive socio-economic progress in western Odisha.
Key infrastructure improvements include an expanded station building with a new entrance portico and a more spacious circulating area. A 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) fitted with ramps now provides safe and barrier-free access for all passengers, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Approach roads have been widened, platforms resurfaced and equipped with additional shelters, while modern waiting halls, upgraded toilets, and clear standardised signage enhance the overall travel experience.
A standout feature of the redeveloped station is its distinctive design inspired by the world-famous Barpali Ikat handloom tradition, known for its intricate patterns and vibrant colours. Artistic elements depicting the energetic Dalkhai folk dance and other traditional art forms of western Odisha have been incorporated into the façade and interiors, giving the station a unique local character and creating a memorable sense of place for travellers.
The enhanced connectivity at Barpali is anticipated to benefit agriculture, trade, tourism, and local industries, creating new opportunities for farmers, handloom weavers, artisans, traders, and small entrepreneurs.
“The transformation of Barpali railway station represents another milestone in Indian Railways’ efforts to modernise infrastructure while preserving India’s cultural heritage. The station is among 75 redeveloped stations across the country slated to be dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, 2026, as part of the ongoing Amrit Bharat Station Scheme,” an ECoR release said.
