New Delhi: The release date of Vivek Oberoi starrer biopic ‘PM Narendra Modi’ has been delayed after the Election Commission(EC) referred the case to Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film, which was scheduled for release on April 5, is now awaiting clearance from the CBFC.
Sources claim the film will now be released on April 12, a day after the first phase of elections begin.
The Opposition has demanded that the film be released after the elections, citing that it is being used by the government as propaganda. The BJP, however, maintains that it is within the purview of the Constitutional right to Freedom of Expression.
“Independent artists, influenced by the lifestyle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, created the film but the BJP is in no way involved in it. There is no content related to the election, which can be banned under the model code of conduct,” the saffron party stated.
On being questioned by the EC about the timing of the release, which was exactly six days prior to the first phase of voting, the movie’s producer said it is ‘purely coincidental’.
