New Delhi: In a significant victory for India and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the High Court of Justice, King’s Bench Division, in London has rejected fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi’s petition to reopen his extradition case.
While handing down the judgment, the court observed that the petition and the circumstances surrounding it were not exceptional to revisit earlier extradition order. “Although a temporary legal obstacle delayed the process, it was lifted in August 2025. Nirav Modi had applied to reopen his appeal citing concerns about potential ill-treatment (basis Bhandari judgment) and questioning whether assurances provided by Indian authorities were sufficient to protect his rights,” multiple media reported, quoting the agency.
“The matter was strongly argued by the Crown Prosecution Service advocate, ably assisted by a dedicated CBI team, including investigating officers who travelled to London for the hearing,” it added.
This ruling, delivered on March 25, effectively closes this legal route for the diamond, who has been in UK custody following his arrest on March 19, 2019 in connection with Rs 6,498.20-crore Punjab National Bank scam. The proceedings have been ongoing since 2018.
