Bhubaneswar: Police have foiled an alleged dacoity attempt at a petrol pump in Odisha capital and arrested four persons following a raid on Baramunda Durga Puja Ground.
The accused have been identified as Siba Brata Swain alias Dudulu of Talasahi, Chinmay Kumar Swain alias Chinu of Bhanjanagar who stayed in Khandagiri, Rajesh Behera alias Chenga of Pokhariput and Aman Champaty of Baramunda.
According to Commissionerate Police, during patrolling late on Wednesday police came to know from reliable sources that some people loaded in four-five vehicles have reached the Durga Puja ground and were possibly planning a loot. The Khandagiri police rushed to the spot and arrested four persons while three others managed to escape.
Police also seized a car, some sharp weapons, two iron rods, and a toy gun from the possession of the four accused.
“The four dreaded criminals along with three others had assembled in the dead of night and were preparing to commit dacoity at Baramunda petrol pump or stop people on the road and loot them on Thursday night. It is because of the alertness and timely action of the Khandagiri police, the loot could be averted,” said Deputy Commissioner Police Prateek Singh.
Police said the accused already had several cases pending against them in different police stations of the city. While four cases are pending against Siba including one for a robbery attempt in Kharavela Nagar, there are 12 cases against Rajesh including one under Arms Act and four cases against Aman.
“The accused had planned the attempt while they were together in jail,” Singh informed.
A case under Sections 399/402 of Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of Arms Act has been filed against them in Khandagiri police station.
