Angul: There was an exchange of fire between the police and Maoists in Purunakot forest of Angul district on Monday.
No casualty has been reported so far.
“The incident took place when the cops were conducting a search operation in the forest area following a tip-off regarding the presence of more than 30 Maoists in the region,” informed Talcher Range DIG, Nrusingha Bhoi.
However, taking advantage of the dense jungle, a few Naxals managed to elude the police dragnet.
Police suspect that the red rebels congregated at the camp to chalk out their strategy to carry out an attack.
The gun battle is underway and search operation has been intensified in the area, sources said.
