Powerful Quake Strikes Japan, Tsunami Warning Issued For Its Coastal Regions



Hokkaido: A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, according to reports. Japan’s national broadcaster NHK prompted tsunami warnings across coastal regions.

Authorities have warned that waves upto 3 metres height could reach parts of Iwate Prefecture and Hokkaido.

Residents have been told to move to higher ground.

Emergency services have been put on alert.

It also cautioned that waves could arrive earlier or later than forecast, reported HT. Besides, it has been cautioned that the waves may be higher than expected.

Japan is one of the world’s most seismically active countries.

The archipelago is home to around 125 million people. It typically experiences around 1,500 jolts every year, reports claimed.
