President Droupadi Murmu Completes One Year In Office On 1st Day Of Odisha Visit

Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu completes one year in the high office on Tuesday. Murmu is set to embark on a three-day visit to Odisha today, coinciding with her completing one year in office.

IN her address to the nation after taking oath as 15th President of India on this day last year, Murmu had said that she was honoured to take charge at a time India is completing 75 years of Independence.

Murmu, who hails from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, has created history by becoming the first tribal and the second woman to hold the highest position of the country.

She is the first tribal woman in the country and the second woman after Pratibha Patil to hold the top constitutional post. Murmu also became the youngest President from a teaching background after Dr S Radhakrishnan (1962-1967), Dr Zakir Hussain (1967-69), Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma (1992-1997), K.R. Narayanan (1997-2002), and Pranab Mukherjee (2012-17).

Born in Rairangpur of Mayurbhanj district, Murmu’s journey to become the country’s first citizen was marked by determination, self-motivation, and hard work.

Known for her simplicity, President Murmu lives in Rashtrapati Bhawan with her sister-in-law and daughter. She adorns herself with traditional handloom sarees, sticking to her roots. She has served as a councillor, MLA, Minister and Governor before being sworn in as the President of the country on July 25, 2022.

Rashtrapati Bhavan has presented some highlights of the first year of presidency of Murmu in an eBook.

It may be noted here that the President is scheduled to arrive in Bhubaneswar around 6.30 pm today. According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson, she will begin her visit with an interaction with a group of medical students, whose education is sponsored by Atut Bandhan, a non-profit organisation.

She will then lay the foundation stone for a new building block of Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar.

On July 26, Murmu will grace the valedictory function of 75th year celebrations of the High Court of Orissa in Cuttack. She will also address the annual function of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, and grace the convocation of National Law University, Odisha, on the same day.

Before returning, the President will interact with the members of particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTG) at Raj Bhavan on July 27.
