US President Donald Trump was impeached by the Democrats-led House of Representatives on Wednesday.
He becomes the 3rd American President to have been impeached. The other two were Bill Clinton in 1988 and Andrew Johnson in 1868. President Nixon had resigned before impeachment proceedings could start.
Trump has been accused of abusing power in office and obstructing Congress during the impeachment investigation. He has also been accused of pressuring Ukraine to open an investigation into the president’s political rival and former vice president, Joe Biden, the 2020 Democratic presidential race.
What Happens Next?
The next step is a Senate trial where a two-thirds majority is required. Trump is likely to be acquitted as Republicans have a 53-seat majority there.
