New Delhi: After Congress leader Sonia Gandhi mentioned to her son Rahul Gandhi — in the presence of media — that President Droupadi Murmu was ‘getting very tired’ by the end of her opening remarks on the Budget session and referred to Murmu as ‘poor thing’, the BJP has strongly condemned such a remark and demanded an apology.
“It is unfortunate that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi made such an inappropriate comment on President Droupadi Murmu… She called her a ‘poor thing’ which translates to ‘bechari’. The President can never be ‘poor thing’… The position she holds and where she comes from, she can never be a ‘poor thing’. She is empowered and capable… If anything, Rahul Gandhi is the only ‘poor thing’ in the country…” said BJP leader, Sambit Patra.

BJP President JP Nadda took to social media and wrote on X: “I and every BJP Karyakarta strongly condemns the usage of the phrase “poor thing” by Smt. Sonia Gandhi for Honourable President of India, Droupadi Murmu Ji. The deliberate usage of such words shows the elitist, anti-poor and anti-tribal nature of the Congress Party. I demand that the Congress Party unconditionally apologise to the Honourable President and the tribal communities of India.”
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said ‘such an insult of the President was unprecedented.’ “The kind of words Congress MP Sonia Gandhi and his son and LoP Rahul Gandhi used against the President, I cannot even imagine. What else can be expected from them?…” Pradhan told ANI.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi dubbed the President’s remark as ‘boring.’ Sonia Gandhi refrained from speaking to the media. But she was heard giving her feedback to Rahul on the President’s hour-long address to a joint sitting of Parliament.
The Rajya Sabha MP, Sonia, was heard saying ‘false promises’, after which Rahul Gandhi said the speech was ‘boring.’ Thereafter, Rahul told the reporters ‘no comment.’ Sonia replied, “The President was getting very tired by the end… She could hardly speak, poor thing.” The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha was seen nodding in agreement, saying the President was “repeating the same thing again and again.”
