New Delhi: The killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was condemned by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday. Calling the killing despicable, she called out “so called leaders of the democratic world” for killing “multitudes of innocent people”.
She also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make efforts to bring back all Indian citizens from affected nations in the Middle East.
“The targeted assassination of the leadership of a sovereign nation by the so called leaders of the democratic world and the killing of multitudes of innocent people is despicable and deserves strong condemnation, no matter what the proclaimed reason for it is. It is tragic that multiple nations have now been dragged into conflict,” Priyanka said, as reported by The Indian Express.
“The world needs peace not more unnecessary wars. Those in charge of it would do well to remember Mahatma Gandhi’s words: An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. I do hope that having genuflected before the Prime Minister of Israel and President Trump, our Prime Minister makes every effort to bring all Indian citizens in the affected countries back home to safety,” she added.
Earlier in the day, the Iranian Embassy in India, issued a statement, condemning Khamenei’s killing.
“In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Republic of India expresses its profound sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, following the brutal and criminal attacks carried out by the regime of the United States of America and the Zionist regime of Israel. The Embassy extends its heartfelt condolences to His Holiness Imam Mahdi (May God hasten his reappearance), to the Muslim Ummah, to the great nation of Islamic Republic of Iran, and to all freedom-loving nations of the world,” the Embassy posted on X.
“Undoubtedly, the grave consequences of this unforgivable crime shall fall directly upon the criminal U.S. regime and the occupying Zionist regime, who bear full responsibility for all resulting repercussions,” it added.
“The proud nation of Iran, as always, will continue its noble path with strength, resilience, and determination. No disruption shall be permitted in the ongoing affairs of the country. The pure blood of the martyrs will only strengthen the resolve of the Iranian people in defending their independence, dignity, and lofty ideals. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India calls upon independent and freedom-seeking governments around the world to strongly condemn this blatant crime and to refrain from remaining silent in the face of lawlessness and aggression,” the statement said.
On Saturday, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said: “The rapidly escalating hostilities between US-Israel and Iran are deeply concerning. The safety and security of every Indian citizen across the Middle East must be our highest priority. I urge the Government of India to take immediate and proactive measures to safeguard our people.”
India, meanwhile, is keeping a close watch on the situation and is yet to issue a formal statement on Khamenei’s death.
