Berhampur: After two newborn babies were seen sharing a single oxygen cylinder at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur, a high-level probe has been ordered into the shocking incident.
The incident, which reportedly took place in the hospital’s super-speciality department, has triggered widespread concern over patients’ safety and medical protocol.
Locals said that the disturbing incident not only showed gross mismanagement of hospital administration but also exposed the poor state of healthcare services in the state.
Perturbed over the issue, the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC-Southern Division) has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the alleged mishandling.
Asking the Superintendent of MKCG Medical College to submit a detailed report, the RDS has sought a clarification on how such a critical lapse took place in a government-run tertiary care facility.
Stressing the need to fix accountability, the RDC every angle should be probed to ascertain as to who was responsible and what led to this gross negligence. The probe should also find whether it was due to a shortage of resources, staff mismanagement, or technical failure.
The incident came to light on Monday when reports emerged that two neonatal were being administered oxygen simultaneously from one cylinder in violation of standard medical safety norms.
Since the revelation, hospital authorities have come under intense scrutiny, with demands being raised for improved infrastructure, better monitoring mechanisms, and strict compliance with neonatal care protocols.
