Mumbai: Even as the teaser of ‘Abir Gulaal’ created a buzz on internet on Tuesday, Raj Thackrey’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) strongly objected to the release of the film, featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, in the state.

“We only learned about this film today. But we are making it clear that we will not allow this film to release in Maharashtra as it features a Pakistani actor. Under no circumstances will we permit such films to be released in the state. We are gathering more information about the film and will soon issue a full statement,” MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar told Dainik Bhaskar.

Suggesting that Pakistani actors should find work in their own country instead of seeking opportunities in India, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam said, “If the central government has a policy on this, it should be enforced. The government must decide whether Pakistani films should be released in India or if their artists should be allowed to work here.”

He added, “There is widespread hatred for Pakistan in India. When a Pakistani film is released, Indian audiences usually don’t prefer watching it. Even if some people watch out of curiosity, Pakistani artists have never achieved widespread success in India.”

Fawad Khan is making his Bollywood comeback with Vaani Kapoor in the romantic drama, after nine years amid an unofficial ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian films in the aftermath of the Uri terror attack in 2016.

On Tuesday, the actress took to her social media handle to share the teaser from the film in which Fawad is seen singing the classic Bollywood song, ‘Kuch Na Kaho’ for her.

Earlier, the filmmakers had shared the first-look poster from the film, along with a statement which read: “Fawad has a massive global fan base, and we anticipate that audiences and his fans will wholeheartedly embrace this film, as it showcases him in his most endearing role yet. The chemistry between Fawad and Vaani is expected to light up the screen with their captivating performances and undeniable charm.”

“The film explores the journey of two individuals who unintentionally help each other heal, with love blossoming as an unexpected consequence,” added director Aarti S Bagdi.

Bankrolled by Vivek B Agrawal, Avantika Hari and Rakesh Sippy, the film is set against a picturesque London backdrop.

The film, whose shooting began on September 29 last year, is scheduled to hit theatres on May 9.

Fawad was last seen in Karan Johar’s 2016 film ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.
