Moscow: The Kremlin has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s various proposals to mediate in the ongoing conflict in West Asia, offered even before the military phase began, are still on the table.
“From the very beginning of this situation, even before the military phase began, President Putin has proposed various options for our mediation and good offices that could help reduce tensions. Many of these proposals are still on the table,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday as the war between US-Israel and Iran entered its 11th day.
“Russia is ready to assist to the best of its ability and will be happy to do so, but you know that this requires multiple understandings and multiple agreements, so we’ll have to be a little patient,” he said.
The comments came a day after Putin and US President Donald Trump spoke over phone. According to the Kremlin, Putin shared specific proposals aimed at ending the war quickly during the conversation. Peskov declined to provide details on the content.
Trump, speaking to reporters, acknowledged Putin’s intentions, saying the Russian leader “wants to be helpful” with the Iran conflict. However, he claims to have told Putin, “You could be more helpful by getting the Ukraine-Russia war over with.”
Recent reports have added complexity. Trump”s envoy Steve Witkoff said over the weekend that he had urged Russia not to supply intelligence to Iran. This followed a Washington Post report alleging Moscow was providing Tehran with targeting data to strike US forces in West Asia.
Peskov did not comment on those reports and avoided saying if the issue arose in the Putin-Trump call. Regarding Witkoff, he noted: “I can only say that Steve Witkoff is indeed in constant contact with his Russian interlocutors, and this channel of communication does allow them to convey signals to each other on the most sensitive issues.”
