New Delhi: Two days after joining the Congress along with fellow-Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia reported receiving death threats on Sunday.
The Olympic medallist, who has been appointed as working chairman of All India Kisan Congress, received a WhatsApp message warning him and his family of dire consequences if he doesn’t quit Congress.
“Bajrang, quit Congress else it will not be good for you and your family. This is our last message. Before the elections, we will show you what we are. Complain wherever you want, this is our first and last warning,” stated the message, sent from an international number.
Bahalgarh police station in Haryana’s Sonipat have started an investigation after receiving a complaint from the boxer.
Bajrang and Vinesh, who joined the grand old party weeks ahead of Haryana Assembly polls, thanked Congress for standing by them during their months-long protest against former federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by several female wrestlers.
Vinesh has been named as the Congress candidate to contest from the Julana Assembly constituency. Haryana will vote to elect 90 legislators in a single phase, on October 5.
