R-Day Violence: Shashi Tharoor, Rajdeep Sardesai Move SC Over FIRs On ‘Misleading’ Tweets

New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and six journalists, including Rajdeep Sardesai, moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday over multiple FIRs filed against them for allegedly “misleading” tweets on the Republic Day violence during the farmers’ tractor rally in Delhi.

FIRs were filed against Tharoor, Sardesai, Mrinal Pande, Zafar Agha, Paresh Nath, Anant Nath and Vinod K Jose in five states, including Delhi, over their tweets on the January 26 violence and death of a protester.

The charges against Tharoor and the journalists include sedition, criminal intimidation, promoting enmity, provocation to break public peace, criminal conspiracy, outraging religious feelings.

Advocate Chiranjiv Kumar lodged a complaint, based on which the FIR was filed at Delhi High Court.

In his complaint, Kumar stated that the accused spread fake news about Navreet Singh’s death on Republic Day by blaming Delhi Police to “instigate violence”.

The protester had actually died due to head injuries when his tractor turned turtle after hitting a police barricade. A post mortem was done, which ruled out bullet injury.
