Sambalpur: The disciplinary committee of Vir Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, has rusticated 12 students for severely thrashing a third-year BTech student inside a hostel room late in the night on September 22.
Two students have been rusticated for two years and the remaining 10 for one year.
One among them is his batchmate and the rest senior boarders.
According to sources, the victim had lodged a complaint with the anti-ragging cell of the university a day after the incident. The committee questioned those who had been named in his complaint and they confessed to have beaten him in the hostel room at Pulasthya Hall of Residence.
Acting on the confession of these students, the committee later rusticated them.
While 31 professors and the Registrar of VSSUT were present at the meeting, Vice-Chancellor of the University Atal Chaudhuri and the victim attended via video conferencing.
It may be mentioned here that Dean, Students’ Welfare, Prof Sudhanshu Sekhar Das had told the Odisha Bytes that it was not a ragging incident but a fight between two students of the third year.
