ew Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Modi government on Saturday alleging it has failed to honour key promises to farmers and is willing to sacrifice India’s agriculture for its own interests.

In a detailed Hindi post on Facebook, Gandhi recalled a direct question he posed in Parliament recently. He asked why the statutory Minimum Support Price (MSP) at C2+50%—promised to farmers in 2021 during nationwide protests—remains unimplemented.

The government dodged a straight answer, simply reiterating its current MSP policy, Gandhi noted. It also admitted pressuring states to discontinue MSP bonuses, justifying this as “national priorities” without logical basis, according to his post.
Gandhi raised further alarms over the interim India-US trade agreement signed in February 2026. He questioned if its clause on reducing “non-trade barriers” signals plans to undermine the MSP system and government procurement that safeguards Indian farmers.

“India cannot stand if its foundation is destroyed—our farmers are that foundation,” he declared, pledging to fight for farmers inside Parliament and on public platforms. The criticism coincides with lingering farmer unrest and concerns over the deal’s tariff cuts on US goods like soybean oil and nuts.
