New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways has cancelled 28 pairs of long-distance special trains due to “poor patronisation” amid the deadly second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic across India.
The special train services which have been cancelled include Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express, and come under the administration of Northern Railways zone.
According to a statement issued by the Railways, the special trains will be discontinued from May 9 until further notice.
With several states imposing lockdowns and strict restrictions, occupancy in trains has gone down significantly.
The last 24 hours saw a record daily tally of 4,12,262 new coronavirus infections and 3,980 fatalities, taking the total tally to 2,10,77,410 and death toll to 2,30,168.
