New Delhi: In a major setback for Rajpal Yadav, the Delhi High Court on Thursday sought a reply from the complainant on the Bollywood actor’s bail application, even as it made strong observations regarding his conduct.
During the hearing, Rajpal’s counsel informed the court a bail plea had been filed, and requested that the complainant be directed to submit a response.
The lawyer also said he had been unable to establish contact with the actor and sought additional time until Monday, assuring the bench that he would “work out something.” He requested a short adjournment.
Taking note of the submissions, Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma directed the complainant to file a reply to the bail application. The matter has been adjourned to Monday for further consideration and will be taken up after the response to the bail plea is received.
However, the court also made sharp remarks during the proceedings, observing that Rajpal had landed in jail because he had “failed to honour the commitments” made earlier.
Rajpal is currently serving a six-month jail sentence after Delhi High Court rejected his last-minute plea for relief in a long-pending cheque bounce case. He surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5.
The case dates back to 2010, when Rajpal reportedly borrowed Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd to finance his directorial debut ‘Ata Pata Laapata’. The film failed at the box office, and the repayment dispute eventually led to legal proceedings.
Before surrendering at Tihar Jail, Rajpal broke down and said, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own. (Sir, what should I do? I don’t have the money. I see no other way… Sir, here we are all alone.)”
