Paradip: A man accused of raping a minor girl in Kujang area of Jagatsinghpur district allegedly committed suicide on Saturday.
The body of the accused identified as Gopi Samal was found hanging in a locked room.
According to available information, Samal had allegedly taken the girl to a secluded place near her house and then raped her on Friday. After the victim narrated the ordeal to her family members, they lodged a complaint with the police this morning.
The locals suspect that Samal might have taken the extreme step fearing arrest.
The rape had evoked widespread outrage with a large number of people demanding arrest of the accused and stringent action against him.
Further investigation into the matter is underway based on the statements of the victim and locals. The victim will be sent for medical examination while the body of the accused will be sent for an autopsy.
