Washington: The US saw a record one-day increase in infections with 84,218 people being diagnosed with COVID-19 on Friday.
The spike broke the record of 77,299 set on July 16.
According to the COVID Tracking Project, nearly 8.5 million cases have been reported in America since the pandemic began.
Following a resurgence in COVID-19 cases in several countries, World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has also called “immediate action” to prevent further unnecessary deaths, essential health services from collapsing and schools shutting again.
He said that the world is still at “a critical juncture”, particularly in the northern hemisphere, in its fights against the pandemic, reports Xinhua news agency
“Too many countries are seeing an exponential increase in cases and that is now leading to hospitals and ICU running close or above capacity and we’re still only in October,” he added.
