Berhampur: A Vigilance court has sentenced a retired assistant commercial tax officer (ACTO) and his wife to rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
The Vigilance had arrested Ramesh Chandra Behera, ACTO (Retired), Unified Check Gate, Chikiti in the district and his wife Mamata Behera, for having disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 34,32,966. The Vigilance had filed the chargesheet in the court.
Special Judge, Vigilance, Berhampur convicted both Ramesh and Mamata in the case under Section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(e) of PC Act, 1988/109 and sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 3 years each.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each and in default of payment of fine, they have to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for 3 months each.
Odisha Vigilance will move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Ramesh following his conviction.
