Berhampur: Hit by water scarcity for years, the silk city of Berhampur in south Odisha will soon get round the clock pipe water supply in every household with a major project nearing completion.
While the residents of around 60 per cent of the areas under Berhapmur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) are set to get uninterrupted water supply by the end of this year, the entire city in Ganjam district is expected to be benefitted by the project by July 2023, sources said.
Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO), which is implementing the project, is likely to provide non-stop water supply to two zones, including Gandhi Nagar, Patitapaban Nagar and Duduma Colony areas under BeMC by the end of this month in the first phase, they said.
Around 60,000 households in the BeMC areas require over 80 million litres of water per day. Round the clock supply for them would be possible because of the completion of the much-awaited Janibili water supply project.
While the newly constructed Janibili project will provide around 43 mllion litres per day (MLD), other two existing projects – Dakhinapur reservoir and Rushikulya water supply project – will supply 27 and 10 mld respectively, they said.
The work is going on in full swing with the replacement of pipelines and diverting the pipelines from the drains. BeMC corporators are being approached for extending cooperation in this regard.
This apart, dedicated power supply is being arranged to ensure smooth supply of the drinking water for which WATCO, a state-owned company, will install three 625-kv power breakers at the Janibili project site and four 250-kv power breakers at the reservoir sites at Jagadalapur, they added.
