Rourkela Girl Wins Silver Medal At South Asian Games

Swasti Singh, daughter of Uma Devi and Amar Singh of oxygen plant of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and the star cyclist of RSP, has brought laurels for the country by bagging a Silver Medal for India in cycling at the 13th South Asian Games 2019 (SAG-2019) being held in Kathmandu and Pokhra, Nepal. 

Notably, South Asian Games is a biennial multi-sport event held among athletes from South Asia. Athletes from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are taking part in SAG-2019.

Swasti won the medal in the 120 kilometre Road Mass Start in the women’s category on the seventh day. The 17-year-old budding star represented India in the open category and exhibited outstanding performance among expert cyclists in the event.

She learnt the nuances of cycling at the Biju Pattnaik Hockey Stadium under the tutelage of Sushil Das, cycling coach of RSP. Her streak of successes includes a Gold and Bronze Medal in the 24th National Road Cycling Championship-2019 held at Jaipur, a Bronze in the 2 Km Individual Pursuit for India in the Track Asia Cup Cycling Championship  2019 in New Delhi and a Gold in the 2 Km Women’s Junior Individual Pursuit event in the 5th Asian Track Cycling Championship 2018 organised by the Cycling Federation of India in New Delhi.
