Bargarh: In a joint operation, Flying Surveillance Team (FST) and Sohela police have seized Rs 7.5 lakh cash from an SUV at a checkpoint near Luhurachati village in Odisha’s Bargarh.
According to sources, the seizure was made after the driver failed to give a satisfactory reply about the sources of the cash and where it was being taken.
In April, Bargarh police had seized Rs 7 lakh cash from two separate vehicles while checking them in view of the upcoming general elections. Another Rs 10 lakh was also seized from a vehicle near Bargarh town.
With the model code of conduct in force, the ECI has put a limit of Rs 50,000 on cash that can be carried by individuals without supporting documents.
Notably, the enforcement authorities have so far seized cash, liquor, valuable metals and freebies worth Rs 40.9 crore from six parliamentary constituencies going to the poll in the third phase of elections. Inducements worth Rs 12.37 crore was made in Cuttack followed by Rs 10.38 crore in Sambalpur, Rs 8.19 crore in Bhubaneswar, Rs 3.46 crore in Puri, Rs 3.34 crore in Dhenkanal and Rs 3.16 crore in Keonjhar.
