Bhubaneswar: Now, Good Samaritans stopping by to help road accident victims and shifting them to hospitals will be rewarded with Rs 7,000 by the government.

Under the Odisha government’s Good Samaritan scheme, Rs 2,000 is given as reward to such people. The Centre has also launched a similar scheme that offers a cash reward of Rs 5,000. Both schemes will now concurrently.

State Commerce and Transport Secretary Madhu Sudan Padhi said, “We will give Rs 7,000 to an eligible beneficiary under both schemes.”

The Odisha government launched its scheme in 2016, which rewards anyone who saves the life of an accident victim with Rs 2,000. The Centre’s scheme, which offers Rs 7000 in reward, was launched on October 15.

The state Transport Department has asked regional transport officers (RTOs) and superintendents of police (SPs) to popularise the schemes of both the Centre and the state.

A large number of accident victims succumb to injuries as people hesitate to help them. The Good Samaritan scheme seeks to encourage more and more people to come forward, assist accident victims and save their lives.
