Sambalpur Stabbing Case: 23-Yr-Old Succumbs At Odisha’s VIMSAR, Mother Still Critical

Sambalpur: Three days after being stabbed by her neighbour over a land dispute in Sambalpur’s Ainthapali area, Payal Das (23) succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, late on Monday.

Her mother, Indu (45), who also sustained critical injuries in the incident, is still under treatment.

On June 14, Suraj Hati stopped the mother-daughter duo near Mahamaya temple in Danipali within Ainthapali police limits around 9 am when they were en route to Sambalpur town on a scooter for some work and stabbed them multiple times with a sharp weapon before fleeing the spot. The profusely-bleeding duo was immediately taken to the district headquarters hospital and later shifted to VIMSAR as their condition deteriorated.

Sources said the woman and her daughter were running a tailor shop after Indu’s husband stopped working due to ill health. The duo got into a dispute with Suraj over a plot of land, which they had bought with their savings in their locality, and had frequent quarrels with the accused.

Meanwhile, police have nabbed Suraj and further investigation is underway.
