Mumbai: Sanjay Dutt appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday and issued an apology following the controversy surrounding the ‘Sarke Chunar’ song.
The actor expressed regret and also pledged to sponsor the education of 50 children.
The move comes amid criticism over the song, which drew the attention of women’s rights body and sparked widespread debate.
The actor’s lawyer informed the NCW that Sanjay was unaware of the lyrics of the song ‘Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke.’
“Sanjay Dutt today appeared before the National Commission for Women and out of his utmost regard for women and for the commission, he said that he was not aware of the wordings but still without prejudice, he has offered an apology and he has also offered voluntarily to sponsor education for 50 children from the tribal community. He said when it was recorded, it was recorded in some other language,” the actor’s advocate was quoted as saying by ANI.

The controversy erupted in March after the track, from the Kannada pan-India film ‘KD: The Devil’, featuring Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt, was released.
The song was criticised for its suggestive lyrics and choreography.
Following the backlash, NCW summoned Nora, Sanjay, and others over concerns of obscenity and vulgarity in the song.
Last month, NCW stated that the content, at first glance, appeared sexually suggestive, objectionable, and in violation of provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act 2000, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.
“The National Commission for Women, in exercise of its powers under the NCW Act, 1990, has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports alleging obscenity and vulgarity in the song ‘Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke’,” the Commission stated.
Amid the backlash, Nora also addressed the controversy through a video shared on Instagram last month.
The post was captioned, “I would hate for anyone to think I endorse this. Thank you for the backlash because of this pressure; the filmmakers have luckily taken it down.”
