SC defers hearing on Mahanadi dispute to Oct 9 as Centre seeks more time
New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday deferred the hearing on the petition by Odisha for formation of a tribunal to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute with Chhattisgarh to October 9 as the Centre sought four more weeks to present data related to it.
Notably, the Centre had sought time twice earlier for preparation of draft for the tribunal.
A two-judge bench, comprising Justice S A Bobde and Justice L. Nageswara Rao, was scheduled to hear the inter-state water dispute. Odisha, Chhattisgarh and the Centre had presented their views before the court with regard to the case on July 25.
Odisha had moved the apex court, seeking its intervention to direct the Centre to form a tribunal to adjudicate the matter and the neighbouring state to stop project works in the upstream of the Mahanadi.
