Senior IPS Officer Arun Sarangi Becomes Odisha DGP In-Charge

Bhubaneswar: Senior IPS officer Arun Kumar Sarangi was on Saturday given additional charge of Odisha’s Director General of Police (DGP).

Sarangi, a 1990 batch IPS officer of Odisha cadre, will remain DGP in-charge until regular DGP is appointed. Retirement of DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal is due on December 31, 2023.

“Arun Kumar Sarangi at present Special DG of Police, Training and Director, BPSPA, is allowed to remain in additional charge of DG of Police, Odisha until regular DGP joins,” said a notification of the Home department.

Sarangi was promoted to the DGP rank on May 3, 2023 along with his batchmates Sudhanshu Sarangi and YB Khurania.

He is presently acting as the Special DG of Police, Training, and Director of Biju Patnaik State Police Academy (BPSPA).

It may be noted here that the state government had earlier allowed DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal to take retirement on December 31.

The state government is reported to have already started the process for the appointment of a new DGP. As a part of this exercise, the state government is reported to have sent a list of five IPS officers to the Central government.

Apart from Arun Sarangi, the officers who are said to be in the race of the DGP are Y B Khurania, and Sudhanshu Sarangi. A 1990-batch IPS officer, Khurania is currently serving as the Special DG of Eastern Command BSF. Similarly, Sudhanshu Sarangi is now serving as the DGP Odisha Fire Services Department.

B Radhika, now posted as the chairman of Police Recruitment Board with additional charge of Director, SFSI after return from central deputation, and AM Prasad, now DG of Prisons, Odisha, are also said to be in the race for the DGP.
