Bhubaneswar: Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) Deemed to be University’s ‘Jaago’ initiative has been promoting learning among slum children.
Students of SOA reach out to slum children and provide them personalised tuition, while also extending other help like books, uniform and healthcare benefit.
A programme was organised to mark the 17th anniversary of ‘Jaago’, where speakers said that serving the underprivileged is an opportunity which can help shape the character of students.
“The Jaago initiative launched in 2007 has been supporting underprivileged children while it was promoting the sense of responsibility towards the society in our students,” said SOA vice-president Saswati Das, who was the chief guest.
The initiative has been creating a spirit of community welfare among students and helping them become good citizens, she said, adding that participating in the Jaago programme will enrich humanitarian aspects in them.
SOA vice-chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda said the education system was intended for the greater good of society while pointing out that National Education Policy (NEP) lays stress on students’ involvement in social work. The activities of ‘Jaago’ had expanded to all institutions under the university, he said.
Among others who spoke on the occasion were Controller of Examination Prof. Manjula Das, Dean of Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER) Prof. Pradip Kumar Sahu, Dean of Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS) Prof. Santosh Kumar Rout, Dean (Students’ Welfare) Prof. Jyoti Ranjan Das, Additional Dean (Students’ Affairs), ITER Prof. Renu Sharma and Mentor of Jaago Prof. Anita Das.
