Bhubaneswar: With Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal brewing in the Bay of Bengal like to make landfall along West Bengal coast by midnight, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued orange warning for 12 districts of Odisha till 4.30 pm.
Moderate thunderstorm accompanied with squall wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph, lightning and light to moderate rain may occur in Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nuapada and Balangir districts.
Under its impact, minor damage is likely to loose/unsecured structures, banana trees and standing crops.
Yellow warning of light to moderate thundershower with lightning and light to moderate rain has also been issued for Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Kandhamal, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Koraput, Malkanagiri, and Kalahandi for 3 hours.
People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strike.
According to the weather agency, the Severe Cyclonic Storm over the North Bay of Bengal is about 220 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 260 km south of Mongla (Bangladesh), 210 km southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and 230 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal). “Currently maximum sustained wind speed of 95-105 kmph gusting to 115 kmph prevails around the cyclone centre. It is very likely to continue to move nearly northwards, intensify further and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, close to southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh) by midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph.”

Under its influence, heavy to very rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at isolated places in Balasore, and Bhadrak with heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) at isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada districts. Light to moderate rain/thundershower may also occur at most places in north coastal Odisha, and at a few places in remaining parts of the state.
Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is also likely to prevail till May 27 morning.
