Warm night conditions are likely in Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nuapada and Bargarh. Hot and humid weather conditions may also occur in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Ganjam and Gajapati districts till May 30.

“Due to prevailing dry conditions in the state and strengthening of northwesterly dry winds, day temperature is likely to remain 3-5°C above normal at many places in interior Odisha during the next 2 to 3 days. The mercury may hover between 43-45°C at a few places in interior Odisha amid isolated severe heatwave conditions. Also due to absence of any major synoptic situation and presence of high humidity in lower level, hot and humid conditions may prevail over coastal Odisha during the next 3 days,” the weather agency said.

People have been advised to take precautionary measure while going outside during the peak hours of the day time between 11 am and 3 pm during these 3 days when the day temperature is expected to touch 46°C.

The IMD further said that establishment of a north-south trough like features towards June 21 may trigger thunderstorms activity in some districts of coastal Odisha. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj on June 1. Similar weather conditions may prevail in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Kandhamal, Nawarangpur, Balangir, and Sonepur on June 2.

Yellow warning of heatwave has again been issued for Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Balangir, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nuapada and Bargarh districts on June 6.

Odisha has earlier experience heatwave on April 5-6 followed by prolonged one over 21 days from April 15 to May 5. The state has confirmed four sunstroke deaths this season so far.
