New Delhi: In a significant relocation, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is set to shift from its 78-year-old address in South Block to a newly-developed state-of-the-art complex.
It has been named ‘Sewa Teerth’.
It’s part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project, under which key government offices are being shifted the new Executive Enclave.
The PMO will function from Sewa Teerth-1, one of three newly-built structures in Executive Enclave-I, located adjacent to Vayu Bhawan.
The new office will be housed in Sewa Teerth-1, one of three state-of-the-art buildings built in Executive Enclave-I next to Vayu Bhawan.
Sewa Teerth-2 and Sewa Teerth-3 will be the new addresses for the Cabinet Secretariat and the Office of the National Security Advisor.
The shift has already began, with Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan holding a high-level meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff and three service chiefs at Sewa Teerth-2 on October 14.
The transition is part of the Central government’s plan to redesign the central administrative district along Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath). The 3-km ceremonial axis is being redeveloped into a more accessible, pedestrian-oriented and integrated government zone.
The complex comprises 10 new office buildings meant to bring together multiple Union government ministries which are currently scattered across Shastri Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan.
Kartavya Bhavan, the core of this new centralised administrative system, will replace the ageing colonial-era and post-independence buildings with a modern, energy-efficient hub for governance.
The historic South Block and North Block buildings will be converted into museums as part of the proposed Yuga Yugin Bharat Sangrahalaya.
Recently, several Raj Bhavans (Governor’s Houses) have been renamed as Lok Bhavans.
