Shakira Case: Prosecutors Seek 8-Year Jail Sentence For Superstar Singer

Madrid: Singer Shakira is in a legal mess in Spain.

Prosecutors in Barcelona said on Friday they will seek a jail term of at least 8 years against the global music superstar after she rejected a plea deal on accusations of tax evasion, reported AFP.

Th prosecutors will also demand a fine of 24 million euros ($24.5 million) from the 45-year-old singer, who gave to international chartbusters like ‘Hips don’t Lie,’ ‘Whenever, Wherever’ and ‘Waka Waka, the immensely popular 2010 World Cup official song.

Shakira, who has sold over 60 million albums, is accused of defrauding Spanish tax office out of 14.5 million euros on income earned between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira rejected a plea deal, saying through her lawyers that she was “absolutely certain of her innocence” and decided to let the case go to court, “confident” that her innocence will be proven in due course.

A trial date has not yet been set.
