Bhubaneswar: Sudhir Kumar Tudu and Debashish Sethy, both commandos of the special operation group (SOG) who were martyred during an anti-Maoist operation in Odisha’s Kalahandi district in September 2020, will be awarded Shaurya Chakra posthumously on Independence Day on Sunday.
DGP Abhya tweeted: “Govt of India has selected for #ShauryaChakra Martyr Debashish Sethy & Martyr Sudhir Ku Tudu. We celebrate their exceptional bravery, valour & courage. Their sacrifice inspires us all. Talked to their family to convey our gratitude & support.”
This is for the first time any Odisha Police personnel has been awarded Shaurya Chakra.
The Shaurya Chakra is awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes posthumously. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra.
