California: Travelling to Mexico to celebrate birthday proved costly for California-based Indian origin woman Anjali Ryot. She was killed in a shootout between two drug-peddling gangs at a restaurant in Tulum, Mexico on Wednesday, October 20, media reports said.

Anjali Ryot lived in San Jose in the United State’s California. She along with a German tourist, Jennifer Henzold, was killed in the crossfire, according to Californianewstimes.com.

Travel blogger Anjali had arrived in Tulum on Monday prior to her birthday on October 22. The Instagram account of the woman describes her as a travel blogger from India’s Himachal Pradesh, living in San Jose.

Anjali had been associated as a senior site reliability engineer with LinkedIn since July. Previously, she used to work for Yahoo.

Anjali and four other tourists were having dinner on the terrace of La Malquerida restaurant around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, when four miscreants equipped with assault rifles opened fire at an adjoining table on the premises, reported Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Anjali and Jennifer were killed in the shootout, while the other three from Germany and the Netherlands were badly injured. According to the authorities, the shootout was a confrontation between rival gangs of drug peddlers in which Anjali and her friends were collateral victims.

Anjali along with her husband Utkarsh Shrivastava had visited Mexico from San Jose to celebrate her 30th birthday on October 22, said Anjali’s father.
