New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital and is now in a stable condition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed.
He will not return to India immediately though. Iyer will “continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly,” BCCI has said.
The Indian cricketer hurt himself while fielding during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
According to the latest bulletin issued by BCCI, the right-handed batter sustained a “blunt injury to his abdomen” while fielding, which caused a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding. The Board confirmed that the bleeding was “immediately arrested following a minor procedure.”
Iyer has undergone “appropriate medical management for the same.” His condition has been monitored closely by specialists in Sydney as part of his recovery process, it has been stated.
“He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the BCCI statement mentioned.
The Board also expressed gratitude to the doctors who oversaw his treatment. “The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India,” it said.
The cricketer suffered the injury while diving to take a catch off Harshit Rana’s bowling to dismiss Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey during the final ODI.
Iyer appeared to be in visible discomfort as soon as he landed, prompting the physio to rush onto the field for assistance. After receiving on-field treatment for several minutes, he walked off with the physio and was taken for medical scans to assess his condition.
The results later revealed the extent of the internal injury. His condition worsened the next day, leading to his transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further observation.
Iyer shared an update about his condition through Instagram Stories, earlier this week, expressing gratitude to his supporters.
“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all kinds of wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” he wrote.
Iyer was ruled out of the Indian T20I squad, of which he was vice-captain, after the injury. Reports suggest Iyer might need close to two months to fully recover before returning to cricketing action.
This means he is likely to miss India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30 in Ranchi.
