Raurkela: Tragedy struck Sundaragada district in Odisha as four people, including three children, lost their lives to suspected snakebites within a span of just 12 hours.
In the first incident, late Monday night, two minor siblings died following a suspected snakebite at Hatioda village under Lathikata block. The victims, identified as 10-year-old Sameer Haro and his eight-year-old sister Sairen Haro, had gone to sleep after dinner when Sameer woke up around 3 am complaining of severe stomach pain. Shortly after, Sairen experienced identical symptoms. Panicked family members initially sought help from Asha worker before rushing the children to Rourkela Government Hospital. Both children, however, died during treatment.
Rourkela police have initiated formal procedures and sent the bodies for postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.
In a separate but equally harrowing incident a septuagenarian and his grandson died at Bhuiyan Sahi in Tileimal village, under Tikayatpali police limits in Bonai. The deceased, identified as 76-year-old Rabi Bhuyan and his eight-year-old grandson Sanjay Naik, were allegedly bitten by a venomous reptile while sleeping inside their home.
Relatives immediately rushed both victims to Bonai Sub-Divisional Headquarters Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
These incidents have come amid ongoing heavy rains, severe waterlogging, and flood-like conditions prevailing across several regions of the state.
