Puri: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Odisha’s Puri has started the process to inscribe the iconic Ratha Jatra, the Chariot Festival, in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
This revered festival, an integral part of the 12th-century Jagannath Temple in the pilgrim town, showcases the rich cultural heritage of India. The inscription would not only acknowledge the festival’s cultural significance but also promote its global recognition.
“We are proud to initiate this process, which will highlight the importance of Ratha Jatra as a symbol of India’s diverse cultural heritage,” Chief Administrator of SJTA Arabinda Kumar Padhee said.
The inscription process involves a thorough documentation of the festival’s cultural significance, traditions, and practices. SJTA Puri will work closely with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and other stakeholders to prepare the nomination dossier.
The nine-day festival of Ratha Jatra attracts millions of devotees and tourists from around the world. The festival’s inscription in UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity would further enhance its global appeal and promote cultural exchange.
