Bhubaneswar: DCP (Bhubaneswar) Prateek Singh on Wednesday said police were investigating all angles in the death by suicide of software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari.
Sweta’s family has blamed her boyfriend Soumyajeet Mohapatra for driving their daughter to death.
Briefing media persons in Odisha’s capital, Singh said, “Soumyajit came to the police station the day Sweta was found dead and was questioned. Sweta’s parents also came to the police station that day but did not lodge any complaint. Later, her family lodged a complaint on the basis of which we registered a case.”
“Soumyajit was not in a good mental state that day. We let him leave with his family after they assured to cooperate in the investigation,” Singh said.
Police have registered a case against Soumyajeet under IPC Section 306 (offence of abetment to suicide) on the basis of the complaint lodged by Sweta’s father.
On Sweta’s family’s charges that Soumyajeet was responsible for her death, Singh said they have asked her family to provide the police with whatever information or evidence they have in support of their charges and that police will probe all angles of the case.
Police were also in touch with Soumyajit’s family, he said.
Meanwhile, contrary to media reports that Soumyajit was in the custody of Chandrasekharpur police and was questioned on Tuesday, police clarified that he was not in police custody.
Sweta, who was found hanging in a rented house at Sailashree Vihar under Chandrasekharpur police limits in Odisha’s capital, died due to asphyxiation, the post-mortem report has revealed.
As per the report, ligature mark was found on the neck of the deceased. No other external injury mark was found on the body.
