Mumbai: In a devastating turn of events, a student in Maharashtra who was preparing for national medical college entrance examination (NEET), ended his life, leaving behind an agonising note for his parents.
The 19-year-old, identified as Suraj Subhash Shinde, was found dead at his home in Khandala, in the Vaijapur taluka of Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
In his suicide not, Suraj promised his parents he will definitely become a doctor in the next life.
“Sorry, Mom and Dad… I will definitely become a doctor for you in the next life. Please take care of yourselves and stay happy,” read the note, written in Marathi.
With investigation underway, preliminary indications suggest that he killed himself due to immense stress related to his studies and future.
Suraj was studying for NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test), one of the country’s most competitive exams, in an upstairs room of his house, as he usually did, when he took the extreme step.
NEET-UG exam has been in the news ever since the entrance exam was scrapped in May following allegations of a paper leak. It sparked massive anger and outrage, bringing together students and youths with the Cockroach Janta Party which had been demanding accountability and the resignation of Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The protest month-and-a-half long protest was called off after Pradhan ultimately resigned.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the paper leak allegations.
