Bhubaneswar: The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into more parts of Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.
It has covered entire Malkangiri, Koraput and Gajapati districts and most parts of Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Ganjam and some parts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Khurda and Puri districts.
The southwest monsoon had arrived in parts of Odisha on Wednesday, around 13 days ahead of the normal time for its onset in the state.
Meanwhile, Odisha is experiencing heavy to very heavy rain under the influence of a deep depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts, which was expected to move nearly northwards and cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara (Bangladesh) by afternoon. Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may prevail along and off Odisha coast till May 30.

According to the evening bulletin, scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph may continue in Odisha till June 1. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in some parts of the state on May 30.
There will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 3 days, it added.
The Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA Deemed to be University had earlier said that Odisha may experience a dry period accompanied by rise in temperature between June 1 and 3 after which rainfall is expected to increase with southwest monsoon covering more areas of the state.
