Spain Retain U-17 Women’s World Cup Title In Front Of Record Crowd At Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai: Spain won back-to-back FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup titles after edging out Colombia 1-0 in a closely-contested final here on Sunday night.

Playing in front of a 50,000-plus crowd at DY Patil Stadium – a record for women’s football in India — the Colombian girls suffered a heartbreak when Ana Maria Guzman Zapata conceded an own goal eight minutes from full time. It turned out to be the only goal of the final.

In the 2018 edition of the championship held in Uruguay, Spain beat Mexico 2-1 to lift the trophy.

Earlier today, Nigeria claimed bronze medal by edging out Germany 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the teams were tied 3-3 in regulation time.

Spain’s triumph brought the curtains down on the first-ever FIFA women’s event, staged in India over three weeks.

Hosts India, who played their group league matches at Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium, lost all three matches to be knocked out in the first round itself.
