Lucknow: Former Union Minister and BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand was acquitted by a special court for lawmakers here on Friday. Chinmayanand was accused of keeping a law student captive at Shahjahanpur allegedly to rape her.
According to special judge PK Rai, the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt and hence acquitted the accused of all charges.
The student, who was the victim, had also turned hostile during the trial in the case against Chinmayanand, noted the court.
The court also acquitted the law student and other co-accused Sanjay Singh, DPS Rathore, Vikram Singh, Sachin Singh and Ajeet Singh of the charges of trying to extort money from Chinmayanand for the lack of evidence.
During the pronouncement of the verdict, Chinmayanand and other accused were present in the court.
