New Delhi: A special bench of Supreme Court will hear Hemant Soren’s petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The three-judge special bench comprising of Justices Sanjeev Khanna, MM Sundaresh and Bela Trivedi will, on Friday morning, hear the plea which seeks immediate release of Soren who resigned as Jharkhand chief minister on Wednesday evening before being taken into custody by the central probe agency in a mone-laundering case.

Soren has accused ED of arresting him as part of a “well-orchestrated conspiracy” by the Central government ahead of Lok Sabha elections, and urged the apex court to declare his arrest “unwarranted, arbitrary, and in violation of his fundamental rights,” reported PTI.

Narrating the sequence of his arrest in the petition, the 48-year-old Soren said he had moved a plea before Supreme Court on January 31 apprehending his arrest by the ED.

“It was requested that Respondent No. 2 (ED) should await the outcome of proceedings before Supreme Court,” stated the plea, adding that despite the intimation, ED took Soren into “illegal custody with the deliberate intent to interfere with the present Writ Petition.”
