Startling Revelation By Police On Woman’s Murder By 2 Sons In Odisha’s Cuttack

Cuttack: A day after an elderly woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her two sons in their house in Odisha’s Cuttack city, police on Sunday revealed startling information about possible reason behind the gruesome murder.

The woman, identified as Anima Mohanty (74), was allegedly murdered by her two sons in her house at Mahanadi Vihar under the jurisdiction of Chauliaganj police station in the city on Saturday morning.

Preliminary investigation showed that the shocking incident was suspected to have taken place over the issue of money as the accused were jobless without any source of income, police said.

Both the accused were depending on the pension money of their mother as they had no source of income, said Inspector In-Charge (IIC) of Chauliaganj police station Debendra Biswal.

He said there is no evidence to show that the two accused – Anshuman Mohanty (42) and Anurag Mohanty (38) – were facing mental health conditions. While Anshuman has been arrested, Anurag is absconding.

The behaviour of the siblings was stated to have worsened in the recent days. Because of paucity of money, the two had also been selling household articles, furniture and other assets from their house to scrap vendors. They were reportedly furious when their mother objected to this.

The 74-year-old had been staying with the two sons in her double-storey house after the demise of her husband, who was a retired bank employee.

On Saturday, Anshuman and Anurag stabbed Anima in the garage of their house following an argument. Hearing the woman’s screams, neighbours informed police. A police team rushed to the spot and began a probe into the incident with the help of a scientific team.

After committing the crime, the siblings reportedly tried to clean the house to remove blood stains and other evidence, police said.
