Rayagada: One student was killed and five others were seriously injured after being attacked by a swarm of bees in Odisha’s Rayagada district late on Wednesday evening.
According to sources, 10 students of Karubai Ashram School hostel in Rayagada had gone to the nearby forest to collect leaves for the decoration for Ganesh Puja in the afternoon.
While collecting fresh leaves inside the forest, the students were suddenly attacked by a swarm of bees. The students ran helter-skelter to avoid the sting. Four among them managed to reach the Ashram school hostel and informed the superintendent about the incident.
The locals then rushed to the forest and rescued six unconscious students. They were brought to the Ashram school where a Class II student succumbed to his injuries. The school authorities admitted the five injured students with the help of the ASHA to the district headquarters hospital late in the night. Of the five students, the condition of two is stated to be critical.
Talking to mediapersons, the family members of the injured students said no hostel staff had accompanied their children to the forest.
Talking to the media on after visiting the district headquarters hospital in Thursday, Rayagada collector Guha Punam Tapas Kumar said a probe has been ordered into the incident. “This is an unfortunate incident. The students are not allowed to leave their hostels without prior permission of the hostel superintendent. We will find out under what circumstances they were allowed to leave the hostel,” she added.
